May 29, 2014, was the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland off the coast of Sainte-Luce-sur-mer near Rimouski.
To commemorate the tragedy, we organized a number of activities held in May 2014 and throughout the summer. People from close to home and far away participated in those activities and learned more about the great ship.
2014 is now behind us, but we will go on telling the story of the liner in memory of the victims and for the benefit of the descendants of those who were aboard. The Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père believes in the importance of bearing witness for the sake of our collective memory. Visit our website for the new discoveries, contacts, stories people have shared and conversations that will continue to keep this story alive.
